Flanders Research Institute for Agriculture, Fisheries and Food (ILVO) is an independent scientific research institute of Flanders Government. Its assignment from the government is to work on the sustainability of agriculture, fisheries and agri-food sector. ILVO’s work is strongly anchored in Flanders and extends from there to Belgium, Europe and the rest of the world. It is competent for scientific research and can conclude therefore research & personnel contracts and it can acquire infrastructure and equipment. EV ILVO performs multidisciplinary, innovative and independent research aimed at economically, ecologically and socially sustainable agriculture and fisheries in a from-farm to-fork approach. Through this research, EV ILVO accumulates fundamental and applied knowledge, which is vital for the improvement of products and production methods, for quality control and the safety of end products, and for the amelioration of policy instruments as a foundation for sector development and agricultural policy for rural areas. Its researchers are grouped in 4 units: Plant Sciences, Animal Sciences, Technology and Food Sciences, Social Sciences. EV ILVO conducts research at a regional, national and international level, and is a member of several international project consortia and research bodies.

Christos Athanassiou is a Professor of Entomology, at the University of Thessaly, Greece, since 2010.
